Putnam, Conn. - At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6th, 2023 the East Putnam Fire Department was dispatched to Ross’s Recycling, 64 Tucker Hill Rd, for reports of a large scrap pile on fire.
On arrival, crews confirmed the reports and immediately stretched an attack line off the fire due truck. Due to the amount of water required to fight scrap pile fires and the lack of hydrants in the area, numerous tankers from surrounding towns were requested to the scene.
As additional crews arrived on the scene a second attack line was deployed allowing crews to douse the flames from two sides as a machine operator removed burning material from the pile.
The fire was placed under control after approximately an hour.
No injuries occurred as a result of the incident.
The Putnam Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the incident.
Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included: the East Putnam Fire Department, Attawaugan Fire Department, Thompson Fire Engine Company, Community Fire Company, West Glocester Fire Department, and the East Killingly Fire Department.
