Putnam, Conn. – Following an investigation into the December 4th garage fire at 182 Grove St the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office has deemed the fire accidental.
That evening firefighters were dispatched at 7:40 p.m. for a reported garage fire. On arrival, crews found fire showing from the second floor of a 3-bay detached garage. Due to an aggressive interior attack by 1st alarm companies, crews were able to keep the fire contained to the A/D (front right) corner of the structure. According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, “The unsafe disposal of smoking materials likely caused the fire in the detached garage of a multi-family property at 182 Grove St. Through interviews and fire pattern analysis, it was concluded that the fire originated on the second floor of the garage. Prior to the discovery of the fire, witnesses stated that a resident was seen entering and leaving the garage which had been used as a workshop. The resident admits to being a smoker and numerous improperly discarded cigarettes were found in the area of origin.”
