Putnam Conn. — On the night of Wednesday, April 5th, 2023 the East Putnam Fire Department, along with mutual aid departments, responded to a kitchen fire at 20 Joslin Rd. The fire was quickly extinguished but the second floor of the home sustained significant smoke and heat damage.
Following a thorough origin and cause investigation, conducted by the Putnam Fire Marshal, it was determined that combustible materials on a stove top were ignited when the stove top burner was inadvertently turned on. The unknowing occupants left the room and were alerted to the fire by the smell of smoke a few minutes later.
No injuries occurred as a result of the fire.
The Putnam Fire Marshals Office reminds people to keep combustibles and clutter clear from stove and counter tops to prevent accidents from occurring. In addition, closing doors when rooms are not in use or when you leave the home will help to contain the fire and lessen smoke and fire damage. Always have working smoke alarms to alert occupants when there is a fire.
