Killingly, Conn. - Just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 6th, 2023, the South Killingly Fire Department was dispatched for a reported motor vehicle accident, with possible serious injuries, in the area of 837 Providence Pike (Route 6).
According to South Killingly Fire Chief Travis Vandale, units arrived to find a single vehicle on its side, against a tree, well off the roadway with 1 person trapped inside. Crews worked for approximately 15 minutes to extricate the occupant.
Due to the positioning of the vehicle, crews had to cut the windshield and hood creating an opening to remove the occupant through the front of the vehicle. During extrication, an air medical helicopter was requested to the scene but was forced to decline the mission due to aviation weather.
After being extricated, the occupant was transported by KB Ambulance, with a QV Paramedic onboard, to UMASS Worcester after being diverted from Day Kimball Hospital, their initial destination. This diversion allows the patient to receive the appropriate level of care in the most timely manner.
Route 6 Eastbound was closed for approximately 15 minutes while crews worked to free the patient.
The incident is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police.
Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the South Killingly Fire Department, Danielson Fire Department, KB Ambulance, KB Ambulance’s QV Medic, Killingly Police Department, and the Connecticut State Police.
