Pomfret, Conn. - Fire crews responded to a well-involved garage fire Monday Evening.
At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Monday, November 20th, 2023, a 1st alarm assignment was struck for the Pomfret Fire Department, for reports of a detached garage fire at 321.
According to Chief Brett Sheldon, Pomfret Fire Department, on arrival crews had heavy fire showing from a small garage that was used as a barn, storing tractors and hay. Crews rapidly deployed handlines and fought the fire on multiple sides of the building. Due to the small size of the structure, the lack of life hazards, and the volume of fire, the decision was made to fight the fire exclusively from the exterior.
Chief Sheldon explained that while there is a single dry hydrant in the area, it is not known to be a reliable source of water and crews would have exceeded its capabilities quickly if it had been used as the primary water supply. Instead, Mortlake’s Hose Tender was sent to the rectory school to establish a suitable water supply site. This allowed for a Tanker shuttle to be established between the school and the scene keeping engines fighting the fire full.
The bulk of the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes of the first unit’s arrival but crews remained on the scene for over an hour overhauling the structure. The structure sustained heavy fire damage but stayed standing.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The cause remains under investigation by the Pomfret Fire Marshal.
Departments that responded, or were dispatched, included: the Pomfret Fire Department, Williamsville Fire Engine Company, Putnam Fire Department, Mortlake Fire Company, East Putnam Fire Department, Attawaugan Fire Department, and KB Ambulance’s Pomfret Crew.
