Putnam, Conn. - Firefighters responded to 182 Grove St Monday evening for the second garage fire in Putnam's Special Service District, within 5 days.
Crews were dispatched at approximately 7:45 p.m. for reports of a garage fire. Assistant Fire Chief Kerry Farrell told Quiet Corner Alerts, crews arrived to find fire showing from the second floor of a 3-bay detached garage. Crews made an aggressive interior attack to keep the fire contained to the A/D (front right) corner of the structure. The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down.
With the Special Service District having a complete hydrant system, and the roadway in this area providing ample room to navigate, crews were able to bring the first due attack apparatus, Squad 478, into the driveway allowing firefighters to easily reach the second floor of the fire building with pre-connected lines while still being able to supply the truck with water from the hydrant network through a short length of Large Diameter Hose (LDH). This hydrant network is a large reason why 1st alarm assignments within the Special Service District are only made up of 3 fire departments.
Two vehicles were being stored in the garage, and one next to it when the fire broke out. The residents were able to get the vehicles out of harm's way, before sustaining any damage.
Even though the fire was quickly knocked down overhaul of the structure and the fire investigation took approximately 3 hours. During this time Grove St was closed in both directions.
Assistant Chief Farrel finished by thanking the mutual aid companies, "They always do a great job and work well with us. It's nice to have that support when we need it."
There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
The Putnam Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire.
Agencies that responded, or were dispatched, included the Putnam Fire Department, East Putnam Fire Department, Attawaugan Fire Department, Putnam EMS, and the Putnam Police Department.
