Sterling, Conn. - A Moosup woman has been airlifted to Providence Hospital after a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident Friday evening.
According to the Connecticut State Police (CSP), at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Friday, September 22nd, 2023, a 53-year-old Moosup woman, operating a 2001 Ford Escape, was traveling west on Plainfield Pike when she lost control and struck a rock wall on the opposite side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned multiple times prior to coming to a stop on its side in the yard of 851 Plainfield Pike. During the rollover, the operator was ejected from the vehicle.
Due to the mechanism of the accident, initial reports described it as a car versus pedestrian accident with serious injuries instead of a rollover accident with ejection.
Based on information from 911 callers, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Dispatch (QVEC) utilized Dispatcher Initiated Auto Launch (DIAL) procedures allowing a Life Star air medical helicopter to be launched prior to the arrival of first responders. These procedures rapidly reduce the time needed to transfer patients to a higher level of care.
Life Star arrived at the landing zone, established in a nearby field, approximately 20 minutes after firefighters were dispatched. The operator was transported by air to Providence Hospital in an unknown condition.
Agencies that responded to, or were dispatched, included: the Oneco Fire Department, Sterling Fire Co., American Legion Ambulance, KB Ambulance’s QV Medic, Hartford Healthcare Life Star, and the Connecticut State Police Troop D.
